1. Thank your stars that we are in a democracy - Presidency tells Northern Youths.

The Presidency on Tuesday knocked some Northern youths for their recent statement on the security challenges being faced in the country, saying that they would have met harsh retribution from a dictatorial government.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement, asked the youths to thank their stars that the nation is operating a “truly democratic government” where free speech is guaranteed.

A coalition of Northern youth groups had on Monday asked the Federal Government to stop the massive killings and raiding of communities in the North by bandits and Boko Haram insurgents.

On its part, the Coalition of Northern Groups had in its June 12 message said Nigeria, particularly the north, has had the worst set of incompetent leaders in the last five years.

But Shehu said it amounted to a grave mistake for the Northern youths to dissociate themselves from Democracy Day and, in effect de-cognizing democracy as a chosen system of government.

He said; “They should thank their stars that we are operating a truly democratic government where the rights of free speech are guaranteed and protected.

This government has done more than any other – elected or not elected – to curtail and beat back the terrorists."

2. National Identity Management Committee registers 900 repentant Boko Haram members.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Monday, announced that it had registered about 900 repentant Boko Haram members.

According to the commission, reliable and secured data of repentant and reintegrated members of Boko Haram were provided by the NIMC through the Operation Safe Corridor Advisory Committee.

The Director-General, NIMC, Aliyu Aziz, described the commission as a strategic partner in the effort at tackling the security challenges in the country.

3. Why other aspirants should step down for me ahead of the Ondo polls - Kekemeke reveals.

A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress and former chairman of the APC in Ondo State, Mr Isaac Kekemeke, has declared that no other aspirant in the party has the statewide popularity that he has.

He expressed confidence in grabbing the ticket of the party at the forthcoming primary of the party based on his popularity.

Kekemeke, stated this while speaking with journalists in Akure the state capital.

He said other aspirants should step down for him because he is the most popular, the most competent, and the only aspirant present on the ground.

Kekemeke said, “Other aspirants should step down for me. I am the most popular. I am the most competent. I am the only one present on the ground. People know me. They should work with me. The governor has done four years, it is now my time after him next year.”

4. We are robbing our children to pay for our greed - Atiku says.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has decried Nigeria’s rising debt profile, advising the Federal Government to desist from “indiscriminate lending”...

The Peoples Democratic Party candidate in 2019 Presidential Election said Nigeria is servicing its debt and not repaying it.

In a statement today entitled, "Nigeria In Financial Crisis: Robbing Our Children to Pay for Our Greed", Atiku said the current administration is leaving debt for the future generation.

He said, "Nothing has shocked me in my entire life in public service as the revelation from Nigeria’s First Quarter 2020 financial reports in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, which shows, alarmingly, that whereas Nigeria spent a total sum of ₦943.12 billion in debt servicing, the Federal Government’s retained revenue for the same period was only ₦950.56 billion. This means that Nigeria’s debt to revenue ratio is now 99%."

"Not only have we squandered our opportunities, we have also squandered the opportunities of our future generations by bequeathing them a debt that they neither incurred nor enjoyed.

Nigeria is facing a crisis, and we cannot continue to keep up appearances by taking out more loans to prop up our economy. That will amount not just to robbing Peter to pay Paul, but to robbing our children to pay for our greed," he said.

5. Why NYSC Camps should be closed for two years - Osibanjo.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says all camps where the National Youth Service Corps orientation exercises are usually undertaken should be closed for two years because of the COVID-19 protocol which demands social distancing.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, said this in a series of tweets on Tuesday while reacting to the controversy generated by the Economic Sustainability Committee report.

The tweets read in part, "Contrary to reports circulating in the mainstream media, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo did not call for the suspension of the National Youth Service Corps.

"It’s the paramilitary orientation camping that is being considered to be suspended for at least 24 months, not deployment to primary assignment i.e. the longer part of NYSC programme would not be affected in case this idea is okayed."

6. Be patient with my Government - Buhari begs Nigerians.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to Nigerians to be patient with his government as everything is being put in place to tackle headlong the insecurity in the polity.

President Buhari also called for calm in his home state of Katsina, assuring that security agencies were working to bring the current wave of banditry and killing to a halt.

The President in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu in Abuja, Tuesday, observed that violent reactions to the security by citizens could distract the plans already laid out by security agencies, assuring that security forces were capable of stemming both terrorism and banditry.

In the statement, he appealed for more patience from the youths, saying the situation would soon be brought under control.

According to the statement; “The Presidency assures Nigerians, again, that the nation’s armed forces are fully capable of dealing with the challenges of banditry and terrorism, urging more patience as the military takes appropriate steps to block gaps being exploited to unleash mayhem on innocent citizens.

President Buhari appeals to the people of Katsina State to be patient and supportive of the ongoing military operations in the state, while sympathizing with those who are bereaved, injured and lost properties."
