Disturbed by the upsurge in rape cases in recent times, President Muhammadu Buhari Monday summoned the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to brief him on what the Nigeria Police had been doing to arrest the menace. Briefing State House reporters after the meeting, the IGP, who said cases of sexual violence against women had been on the rise as a result of lockdown caused by the outbreak of COVID-19, disclosed that 799 suspects had so far been arrested. According to him, whereas 717 rape cases have been reported in the last five months, 631 of them have been thoroughly investigated and charged to court, while the remaining 52 cases are still being investigated. Adamu also said the Nigeria Police and other security agencies as well as non-governmental organisations and civil society organisations had been collaborating to jointly nip the matter in the bud adding that the federal government has joined the league with a view to putting the scourge under control. “The Nigeria Police so far from January-May 2020, has recorded about 717 rape incidents that were reported across the country, about 799 suspects have been arrested; 631 cases conclusively investigated and charged to court and 52 cases are left and under investigation. “The police and other security agencies and other non-governmental organisations have been collaborating, to see to it that these cases of rape and gender based violence are dealt with. “The NGOs and CSOs that have the capacity to deal with this kind of offences, have been cooperating with law enforcement agencies in capacity building, management of victims of rape and similar offences and procedures for collecting evidence, towards successful prosecution. The government has taken the matter to another level now because of the surge we have noticed,” he said. 2. COVID-19: Ondo records 30 new cases one week – Gov. Akeredolu.
Gov.Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has disclosed that the state recorded 30 new positive cases of COVID-19 in one week. Akeredolu disclosed on Monday in Akure during a press briefing on the deadly pandemic in the Government House. He said that 11 of the new cases were in Okitipupa Local Government Area, while seven were health workers, who contracted the virus at a private hospital in the area. “This is a frightening and embarrassing situation which tells us that COVID-19 is at our doorstep. “We have a total of 73 confirmed positive cases, 33 treated and discharged, 31 active cases and nine deaths. “Some arrests were made yesterday, while vehicles were also impounded because they were outside after the 7 p.m. curfew,” he said. 3. The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Sikiru Osinowo is dead.
The Senator popularly known as Pepperito in the state political circle died at the First Cardiologist Hospital, Lagos after a brief illness. According to a source, the senator died of suspected coronavirus-related complications .
Spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Hon. Seye Oladejo confirmed the death to our correspondent. “It is unfortunate. He was such a good guy,” he said, adding that further detail about his death would be released later.
Osinowo who was born on 28 June, 1955 was a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Kosofe constituency 1 since 2003.
He was however nominated by the party to contest the senatorial election for Lagos East in the 2019 election which he won, replacing Senator Gbenga Ashafa. Osinowo is one of the trusted political sons of the National leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Adebayo’s father was the Late Alhaji Rabiu Osinowo from Odo-Egbo in Ijebu Ode and his mother is Mariamo Taiwo Osinowo. He had his primary education at St. Augustin Primary School in Ijebu-Ode and his Secondary Education in Issoyin Grammar School, Isoyin. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says it has registered about 900 repentant Boko Haram members. In a statement on Monday, NIMC said as a strategic partner in the effort at tackling the security challenges in the country, it will provide reliable and secure data of repentant Boko Haram members who have been reintegrated into society. Aliyu Aziz, director-general of the commission, reiterated the agency’s readiness to provide “accurate, secured and verifiable data when needed” . “The commission has the capacity to support the FG in the ongoing war against security challenges through its functional and world-class verification and authentication services residual in its modern and up-to-date database,” he said. John Enenche, coordinator of defence media operations, said NIMC is one of the agencies involved in the deradicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration process of ex-Boko Haram members. Enenche said no repentant Boko Haram member will evade arrest if they renege on their pledge to give up arms, particularly with their data captured by NIMC. 5. A coalition of Northern youth groups under the umbrella of Coalition Against Killings In Northern Nigeria (CAKIN) and the Northern Groups Coalition (NGC) have asked the federal government to stop the massive killings and raiding of communities in the north by bandits and the Boko Haram insurgents. In separate statements issued on Monday in Kaduna, they decried the deplorable security situation in the north and demanded the immediate removal of service chiefs. The group called on President Muhammadu Buhari to tackle the situation to act fast to safe the maiming and destructions of lives and property. CAKIN in its statement gave a 14-day ultimatum to federal government to stop the killings in the entire states of the north, warning that it would be left with no option than to mobilize citizens to take to streets until the government is completely shutdown. The group lamented that five years into President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the security situation had continued to escalate, leading to massive killings and destructions. The group declared that Buhari has failed Nigerians who gave him massive support, believing that as a retired military general, he had the capacity to tackle the security challenges bedevilling the country.
